Usually when this happens it's simply because the browser wasn't configure to route SSL traffic and/or because it didn't have the Certificate Authority installed. At least I think that's what happened in that other ticket.

That said: there is a known BIG problem with beta-9 in that basically a bunch of stuff is broken around the socket handling code, which gets really tricky with HTTPS. It basically was a botched PR that upgraded to the latest version of HttpClient. It's going to take a lot of work to fix it up, so in the meantime try beta-8 and see if that helps.
