Right now there is no functionality like that in library.

The only think you can do is make your own mechanism that will save current position in navigation controller's stack, and after switching between menu items restore to saved position.

I can suggest you to do following.

Make a subclass of UINavigationController:

@interface MyNavigationController ()

@end

static NSMutableArray *stack;

@implementation MyNavigationController

- (void)viewDidLoad
{
    [super viewDidLoad];
    // Do any additional setup after loading the view.

    if ([stack count]) {
        //restoring navigation state if exists
        [self setViewControllers:[stack mutableCopy]];
        stack = nil;
    }
}

- (void)dealloc
{
    // Saving navigation state
    stack = [NSMutableArray arrayWithArray:self.viewControllers];
}

+ (void)initialize
{
    [super initialize];

    /*
     * We need to set a memory warning listener,
     * to deallocate recreatable resources
     */
    [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self
                                             selector:@selector(handleDidReceiveMemoryWarning:)
                                                 name:UIApplicationDidReceiveMemoryWarningNotification
                                               object:[UIApplication sharedApplication]];
}

/*
 * Cleaning up some memory
 */
+ (void)handleDidReceiveMemoryWarning:(NSNotification *)note
{
    stack = nil;
}

In storyboard select navigation controllers that connected to your menu with segue of type AMSlideMenuContentSegue and set class name to created class.

for some reason self.viewControllers is always empty in dealloc... trying to figure out why. Any ideas why it's empty?

seems that view controllers deallocated earlier that navigation controller.
Try to replace - (void)dealloc method with -viewWillDissapear:
