yeah, uiautomator can dump a screen layout xml to disk on the device, which the bootstrap jar can parse and return as json. it's on the to-do list :-)

What do you think of automating it like this?

$ adb shell uiautomator dump /cache/dump.xml
UI hierchary dumped to: /cache/dump.xml
$ adb pull /cache/dump.xml /tmp/dump.xml

Then the XML can be converted to JSON with a jar outside the emulator and served as a response by Appium.
