Trying to understand this use case more: you want the names of all buttons but not the buttons themselves?
This definitely departs from the WebDriver spec in a general way, not a mobile-specific way, so I'd want to be very careful implementing an appium-specific extension of this kind. But help me understand your use case more and why the WebDriver Way™ would be too cumbersome.

It's not just buttons. The use case is viewing all values for a certain attribute filtered by tag. For example viewing the name of all static texts. UI Automation works well and WebDriver isn't capable of this feature with reasonable performance characteristics. Maybe it's fine to just leave this implemented in regular UI Automation.
