This is currently a known issue; the concept of waits in UIAutomation land is not quite the same as in WebDriver, so we'll have to do something to make it work, or maybe remove support for the implicit wait command so it's not confusing. @santiycr any ideas?

The retry can be done in the appium side without involving UIAutomation or instruments in any way. Just make findElement check for a "timeout" value stored somewhere in memory, then retry every .5s until the element is found or the timeout is met, then finally respond to the client.
