This isn't apertium-init's problem. You have a script named signal in the path that is overwriting Python standard modules. That will break tons of things.

That's not apertium-init. It's the Python subprocess module which requires the signal module. You'd have to some real path garbage to fix this natively and I'm not certain it's possible.

More importantly though, this signal script you have will also break any of your other scripts that use the subprocess module which is probably any that call out to Apertium cli :(

Yep. Or rename the signal script ;) pip install apertium-init would also work and then it's easily upgradeable without having to redownload.
