My issue is, what exactly happened there? was it something external from the app triggering the request?

This is the url that the Android system uses to check whether there is network or not. If you block that url, various things get broken. AntennaPod does not explicitly connect to that url, it just uses system components to do networking. That's likely why your feed refresh is broken when blocking the url.

Can we potentially have a list of the URLs to whitelist for complete functionality of the app?

No, that depends on the podcasts you are subscribed to and their hosting services. AntennaPod itself does not need any specific URLs (unless you want to use one of the search or synchronization services, then it needs access to that service).
