[ansible.builtin.copy] Fails on filesystems which do not support chmod about ansible HOT 7 CLOSED

I believe this is caused by the following code:

If this were included in the try-except from the line below, or if this chmod behaviour was made optional through a variable, I believe this would resolve the issue

As in the referenced comments, your best bet might be a custom action/module for 'non posix' systems, most of core actions expect POSIX compliant systems, with some workarounds for windows, but that has mostly moved to it's own collection.

Thanks for clarifying, and apologies for not spotting the existing issues - I did search but clearly not too well!

The workarounds suggested in those seem to do the job, specifically copying the file elsewhere on the remote system then performing another copy action with remote_src=True
