I think you are referring to a behavior that may be out of the box for the datepicker. See the following fiddle to see how this looks: http://jsfiddle.net/W74cf/

thanks, it did work using an option object from the scope:

<input type="text" 
class="inp-gu2" 
ui-date="dateOptions" 
ng-model="fiscalPeriodEnding" 
ng-required="true" />

and

$scope.dateOptions = {
        changeYear: true,
        changeMonth: true,
        yearRange: '1900:-0',
        showOn: "button",
        buttonImage: "images/icon-calendar.png",
        buttonImageOnly: true
    };

I want to open and close the calendar from another button/link. How can I do this?
