App doesn't respect AVAudioSessionCategoryAmbient but is definitely set. about camera HOT 3 CLOSED

This Stack Overflow post mentions that changing from AVAudioSessionCategoryPlayback to AVAudioSessionCategoryAmbient did make the mute switch mute audio.

This also seems promising but doesn't work:

After some back and forth, it looks like using the MixWithOthers is the key. You have to also make sure that the audio route is set to the last / current audio route...
