Agreed that we need better debugging. One possibility is to have keywords instead of debug levels, and you list on the command line the keywords associated with various debugging messages. Then you'd see only those.
Chris also noticed that the Print.debug
statements slow down brazil even without -V 3
by a factor of 3 or 4, so we need to do something about that as well.

I am closing this because there are no more hints in the kernel. They are user defined. We can open a separate issue for "better debugging" (but we probably want "better error messages" first).
