We use partclone which doesn't support cloning mounted partitions. Here's the upstream reason
I am sorry about there is no plan to implement on-line backup tool. Partclone-utils is a program to mount special raw file made by partclone only. Backup mounted partition is dangerous for block based tool, ex: partclone. Fsarchiver can back up directory(ex root or any mount point) to special image, maybe you could give a try.
Practically you can backup your partition by ensuring it isn't mounted, ie using a livecd/usb or from your other OS.
