All errors returned by Alamofire are AFError values, so casting to NSError is unnecessary. To properly find underlying system errors you can either access the proper case in the AFError, sessionTaskFailed to access the error there. Unfortunately URLSession can return several error types, but URLError is the most common, so you can cast it there. Or just use the underlyingError property to access any captured error and cast it to the right type.
