We're looking into this now, and should have a fix soon. In the meanwhile, a new release (1.0.40) is out with a bunch of serialization related enhancements.

Take a look at the serialization note in the doc: https://pythonhosted.org/aerospike/aerospike.html#aerospike.client . You can look at using your own serializer for now, especially if you want to pack things yourself.

Just so you know, for something like a float you do not need to write your own serializer. The changes described in the release notes take care of that now.
