so, is it just a matter of updating the embedded tx? We fetch its sources via git submodule, should be easy to update. I'm away from my machine right now, maybe @dscorbett or Josh could give that a try?

I updated the submodule, built it, and installed it, but building cffsubr’s wheel failed:

It does work if I don’t update the submodule, so maybe there was a change to AFDKO’s build system between versions 3.6.1 and 3.9.6.
