You know I read all the way into the readme and didn't see the version number? 2.9 > 2.8
I'm trying the ppa:q3aiml/wxwidgets2.9 now to see if it helps.

Installed on Gentoo, and I had to install x11-libs/wxGTK-2.9.4.1 to successfully build. See http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7329216.html#7329216

With FreeBSD, x11-toolkits/wxgtk29 (wxgtk2-2.9.4_1) works if you fix build.sh to call wxgtk2u-2.9-config instead of wx-config
(I haven't seen it run, but the build completes successfully)
